Things to do in New York for families

There's a good reason why NYC is regarded as the capital of the world. The city that never sleeps has something for just about everyone. It's huge, sprawling and boasts a diverse blend of cultures and traditions; it's a vibrant melting pot of the entire planet.

It's an ideal place to visit if you're holidaying with the family. Kids and grown-ups alike will find something of interest in this incredible city. Here are a few suggestions.

Visit Central Park
One of the largest public parks in the world, Central Park has had a turbulent history. Since it was officially designed and designated during the Civil War era, it has fallen into decline on more than one occasion.

Today it's in fine shape and remains one of the most popular destinations for visitors and locals alike. Popular among tourists are the classic horse-drawn carriage tours - a romantic throwback to the city's past. You can also rent bicycles, or join one of the many organised walking tours.

Shop at the famous toy stores
NYC is renowned for its unbeatable shopping and, if you have children, they will no doubt want to lose themselves in one of the many enormous toy shops. Toys R Us and Kidding Around offer gigantic, multi-floor experiences but, for most, the daddy is FAO Schwarz on Fifth Avenue. Established in 1862, it's the oldest toy shop in the US, and was featured in movies like Big and Home Alone 2.

See the American Museum of Natural History
Most kids are fascinated by dinosaurs, and nowhere are they celebrated in as much detail or liveliness as in this epic museum. Across 25 buildings and 46 permanent exhibition halls, the museum tracks all of natural history, including human origins, oceans, plants, and space. But the highlight for many will be the thrilling fossil halls, which feature real and replica skeleton models of dinosaurs and many other beasts.

Visit the Bronx Zoo
As well as extinct animals, why not see some living ones too? Head north of Manhattan to the Bronx and you'll find one of the largest city zoos anywhere in the world, home to around 4,000 animals.

Found within Bronx Park, you can enjoy the 'African Plains' exhibit, featuring lions, tigers, zebras and giraffes, and the indoor tropical 'Jungle World', home to otters, gibbons, leopards and much more. It's a sure-fire hit for a young family.

Remember travel insurance
A family trip to New York should always involve comprehensive travel insurance, for maximum peace of mind. When booking insurance, it's advisable to take out coverage with a company who offer specialist knowledge, and always try to find the cheapest travel insurance to suit your budget.
