Finding Your Way Around Manhattan

New York is big and congested, but the design of the city is a very logical grid system with streets going east and west and avenues running north and south. If you aren't daunted by traffic, then you may find driving around the city is not a problem. The problem is parking which can get very expensive. We have found it more convenient to park in the Port Authority Garage right near the exit from the Lincoln Tunnel if you are entering the city from the NJ Turnpike or a cheap, open parking lots near the Javits Center (11th Avenue between 34th and 39th Streets) and take cabs around town. The fares are a lot less expensive that parking in downtown garages at $25 per hour and up.

There is always the subway and buses, but if you are new to New York, you will find the subway confusing at best. It is an acquired skill that takes nerve at first, but if you study up it can be useful for an extended stay on a budget. To see the city as an unabashed tourist we recommend buying a guide book, a good map and taking one of the tours listed below.

Recommended New York City Guidebooks
There are dozens in print. Below are three that we recommend.
